Written from the perspective of the moralist that book is one of those books, which, under cover to classify the passions, aim to achieve perfection a "rational soul" . Pierre Charron, who was from 1601 in his treatise "Of Wisdom" launched the fashion of such works. Table the human passions of Coeffeteau, published for the first time in 1620, and real bestseller at the time, is one of most famous examples. Coeffeteau Nicolas (1574-1623), this Treaty does not fully condemn the passions, though he sometimes inspired writings of the Stoic philosophers, including Seneca for anger, but he still recommends moderation, which in that a rather Aristotelian "The effort of virtue is not to destroy or tear the soul entirely natural passions, but to moderate and regulate them with the brake on the right." This work has been translated into English from the year following its first publication in France. Coeffeteau places, it seems, anger, well above all other passions through, including the amorous passions, the desires of the flesh and everything concerning the disorders of love. Physiology of the passions is still a long way from that developed a few years later by Descartes.

Nicolas Coeffeteau was considered, moreover, as one of the greatest prose writer, whose purity of language served to Vaugelas.

This book, despite numerous editions between 1620 and 1669 (there are more than 20), remains a work difficult to obtain in good condition then.
