study followed from a few excerpts
Ebinto only had two friends and Koula Bazié.
"In my dreams are entwined with reality and correcting its negative sides, And I'm not dreaming, I see life differently," said her friend Monique Ebinto. (P.19)
"Books are always the same story: a boy loves a girl and blah, blah. It only serves to sharpen the sensitivity to pain. That's why I never read, "concludes Bazié, Ebinto friend. (P.27)
"Throw my book, tell yourself that this is only miles postures in front of life, chosen yours Andre Gide quoted Ebinto (p.36)
" I I loved him and I wanted to move from friendship to that of love. She realized this and told me not to confuse the two. She quoted Hugo "(Friendship) is to be brother and sister, two souls which touch without mingling, two fingers e hand. "Love is to be two and only one. A man and a woman merge into an angel. It is heaven. "
" Often I was with Muriel always ready to declare my passion. But a gesture, a glance Muriel silence imposed on me in which I could not live; Why is this girl I tolerated it if she did not love me? Was it not to hurt me or to flatter his vanity? In any case I did not feel the soul of those who love the precious time in France and was courted by a woman for twenty years to get a response. "(P.42)
" I live with Muriel Azari, the son of a doctor. I could not hear what they were saying but they seemed to get along very well. Muriel smiled Azari. The eyes of the girl had the same brightness as those of Monique when she spoke.
"I was there like a stunned by the sight of these two young people who are perfectly happy at my expense ... But I had to give up, stay on my defeat and lose Muriel? Do not fight? But how to fight? Love does not demand physical strength or intelligence. "(P.43)
Before them, it speaks Azari:
" - The mob is in commotion, "he told Muriel that was very serious
"-that is what happens, Ebinto ? I asked her in a voice trembling slightly.
"" I am come to fetch you.
"Oh! here, here, "chuckled Azari. It is the revolt of the proletariat.
"(...) - You see, Azari, I do not hate anyone because he is rich and I do not condone that despises me because I am poor. But I warn you now: I do not wish that you turn around Muriel. "(P.44)
" It is sublime when you have the courage to fight fairly for what you love "Muriel said she Ebinto. (P.45)
"Providence," I replied, philosopher, sometimes takes perverse pleasure in torturing some poor people. Three days ago, when I saw you next to the museum, you just leave your room in hospital. Now it's time for your wife to-morrow, probably, it will be that of your son. One would think that the hospital please ... Believe me, sir, you would abandon your absurd existence, you would buy a machete and you'd go get hired in a coffee plantation. You would earn your living honestly.
- I, work in the fields! And who let Abidjan? It seems that life has stopped. "(P.60
" My only window looked behind the house on a species of tiny depression always flooded during the rainy season and I called my "lake." But what was mostly my pride, it was my small library. (...) This library contains over sixty books ... I had booked the second
(shelf) to my favorite authors and the general Hugo had a prominent place. Beside him, there was Balzac, Saint-Exupery, Mauriac and among Africans David Diop, Diop and Birago Dadié. (...) With Richard Wright, the Bronte sisters, Valle, Pierre Benoit and Morris West. There were also novels for children of Enid Blyton, the Comtesse de Segur, etc.. "(Pp.63-64) Two letters arrive in
Ebinto during holidays in his native village, Akounougbé. Muriel's letter it first opens and reads a separation of the latter to maintain their friendship and then she left to pursue his studies in France. Ebinto is afflicted. "I reread the letter several times Muriel. I tried to understand every word, I tried to enter a secret message to me was positive. But I needed to be very stupid not to understand that this message was the fatal sentence. Muriel does not like me. "(P.66) This is a
good advice for a course text commentary. To understand the message, you must read between the lines, the narrator and receiver of the letter wants to do: read multiple times, find the meaning of each word.
The second letter is that of Monica telling him she was pregnant with him, his father would return to the home, and Ebinto him if he did not marry, he would put in prison.
"My poverty, I was worth and pride myself, but I realized that day that he was sad to be poor. Was it true that "money that's life" as said Vautrin? (P.67)
Address the reader how to find an accomplice or support "That evening, I was talking to my mother. I told him everything you know, reader, of Muriel, Monique and myself.
- This girl loves you very much, "said my mother talking about Monica. She will make you happy. "(P.70)
This situation is like that in bed Andromache by Jean Racine: Orestes loves Hermione who loves Pyrrhus who loves Andromache (who still loves her late husband Hector and her son Astyanax) Monique who loves Ebinto Muriel loves who loves friendship with Ebinto.
Fate played thus Ebinto as he played heroes of antiquity.
Her mother insists that he marries the girl.
"We are the generation of the transition between two civilizations. We are the generation of sacrifice. One of my young fellow Europeans told at school that we, young blacks, we invented our problems, our woes. I replied that if he had understood Rene, there was no reason that we do not understand. This passage confirms the thesis contained in the book of Cheikh Hamidou Kane's Ambiguous Adventure where Samba Diallo was the sacrifice.
"So far I had seen men with love. The anger of being a nobody opened the door another way: the MAL . And, oddly, I remembered that Maldoror "was good during his early years" and "then realized that he was born wicked fate amazing! "The advice of Mr.
Rouget the head of the plantation where Ebinto was hired as foreman:" You see, Ebinto, life has not been easy with me. I was hard on her. I warned the moves. "(P.80) He tells him the ruin and death of his parents in decolonization.
Mr Rouget said that "happiness consists in equality of desires and strengths "(p.88) In fact he cites Fromentin. Ebinto back to Hugo and evokes "Those who live are those who struggle" (p.88)
After Monique suffer by his indifference, it was finally aborted during an illness, despite using the wife of an employee to. It was the turn of Ebinto get sick, Monique takes care of him, made him take a ride in his recovery.
Ebinto draws again from his reading: Les Miserables Hugo. He asked Monique to read him "She began to read, speak of human misery that Hugo has painted so well "(p.92)" Of course Jean Valjean is a wretch as Javert; Thenardier worse. But there are nuances of their miseries. Some try to get out of the mud in which nature has made to fight for good and achieve a certain ideal, and Jean Valjean. Others believe the ideal touch without knowing it, they are miserable by their inhuman actions: Javert example. Other cons by plunging headlong into the crime and know the misery in all its forms: the case of Thenardier. But me, what was I compared to these characters? (92)
Philosophy " The swan song "Plato in Phaedo :" When they (the swans) feel indeed come the hour of their death, the song they had before, this song is so brilliant and more frequent than ever, in their joy of being about to go away from God they are the servants. But men with their fear of death to the evil of swans: they lament, they say, death, pain Supreme inspires them this song. " "Everything is so absurd" (p.93)
In Part 3, Monique went to get the supplies decides to leave. She leaves a letter held overnight at Ebinto. "I decided to fight for my love" she said (p.97)
"Ah, marriage! It surprised me, but I came to have some idea. It seemed like a pact in which each spouse is committed to understanding each other in all circumstances and to forgive him if possible, a pact which the truth must subjugate the petty discussions, where love alone must triumph. "(P.104). This passage is an intertextual page of Life de Maupassant.
This bed and sees the love of the girl, and his true feelings would come back, he For a bike to meet the girl at the station at night alone. He returns and begins to make up for lost time, but time is already lost to them both. During leave taken they decide to spend it in the village of Ebinto. Night in the river crossing, Monique tomb of the dugout, because Ebinto had left to take a lifeline and now the storm redoubled. Saved by fishermen, Monique is dead and will be buried by his family. Ebinto is like crazy, whistling.
comparison between Javert and Thenardier (p.107) but also with Vigny. "I cried myself more despicable than Javert and Thenardier loosely on myself hard for a young girl who had committed the "crime" to love me madly. "Weeping, praying is in vain" famous idea of Vigny. (P.107)
In his attempt to win the shore with his wife Monique, in the dark of night and storm Ebinto: "Courage, once brewed, yes, another, now, as it continues "Each breaststroke cost me a superhuman effort, but it had always start another, then another." (P.122) For the superhuman effort to save themselves, see also Antoine de Saint-Exupery in Terre des hommes where Guillaumet not made, yet not to escape. Amadou Kone
